Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has admitted he is not the ‘biggest fan’ of one of the Reds’ current stars.
The Sky Sports pundit has been vocal about his former side, most recently naming four areas of the squad Liverpool have to sign in the summer.
Despite a lack of transfer activity in the last two windows, the Reds have continued to enjoy a brilliant season under Arne Slot.
They sit at the top of the Premier League table with a six-point cushion over the rest, having played game more, while they are also in the next round of the UEFA Champions League and FA Cups.
They could still also reach the final of the Carabao Cup, with a 1-0 deficit against an injury-hit Tottenham the only thing standing in between them and a record-extending 15th League Cup final.
However, despite their brilliance this season under Slot, Carragher has revealed that he is still not completely won over by the quality of one of Slot’s trusted players.
What Jamie Carragher said about Liverpool star
Jamie Carragher name-checked West Ham Lucas Paqueta as a player who could improve Liverpool while revealing that he is not a big fan of Dominic Szoboszlai, who he felt needed to do more.
“I was commentating on West Ham, but I was just watching (Lucas) Paqueta thinking ‘oh my’ every time he brought the ball down on his chest or his shoulder,” Carragher said on The Overlap Fan Debate.
“I was actually thinking, would Liverpool sign him.
I know (Manchester) City did try, but I look at his lack of athleticism in some ways and think, would that stop a top team (from signing him) because of what he would do off the ball?
“And I think of Liverpool because I’m not (Dominik) Szoboszlai’s biggest fan but he’s got great athleticism.
10, and people say he’s great off the ball, but I’m thinking: ‘He’s the No?
10; he’s scored three goals’.
“And I know he does a great job for the team but Slot would probably still prefer Szoboszlai than Paqueta.”
Szoboszlai arrived at Anfield from RB Leipzig for £60million in the summer of 2023 and immediately established himself as a key cog in Jurgen Klopp’s side, making 45 appearances in all competitions last season.
He has played an integral role in Liverpool’s success this season, too, often featuring in a more advanced role than fellow midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.
